April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Every hour, someone dies from oral cancer and 100 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed every day. With an early diagnosis, there is an 80-90% survival rate. Unfortunately, a majority of cases are not discovered until the later stages because most cancerous lesions cannot be seen during traditional screenings.
Just as we have pap smears, mammograms, and prostate screenings, we recommend a more advanced screening for oral cancer, such as the one we use called Vizilite Plus, at least once a year to patients.
The Vizilite Plus allows us to identify lesions at their earliest stages, making treatment of the disease more simple, less invasive, and more successful.

Throughout the month of April, in honor of National Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Wellesley Dental Group will be donating all proceeds from any Vizilite Plus screenings performed to the American Cancer Society.

A common misconception about oral cancer is that you need to be a smoker or chew tobacco to be at risk. Even non-smokers are at risk for oral cancer, and new research has linked the disease to HPV. Anyone who is 18 or older or sexually active should be screened.

We invite everyone to schedule a screening, including non-patients. The screening is painless and takes less than 10 minutes. Please forward this information to everyone you know and care about. For more information, please call us at (781) 237-9071 or visit our website at www.WellesleyDentalGroup.com.

We really hope we can all make a difference in the fight against oral cancer.
