Benzocaine Use on Teething Babies Harmful

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about using benzocaine to ease gum pain in teething babies. They are advising not to use it in children under the age of two unless prescribed by a doctor.

Benzocaine is a local anesthetic and is found in such products as Orajel, which make it easily accessible. However, use of it can lead to a rare and serious condition called methemoglobinemia, which is an oxygen difficiency in the bloodstream.
