Brace yourself!

Q: Dr. Abdallah, I have braces. How often do I have to brush my teeth?

A: Braces are considered “food traps.”  Sticky foods are more difficult than other types when it comes to cleaning between braces.  The day braces are placed, patients are given brushing kits that contain most of the tools needed to maintain the health of teeth.  We recommend that teeth be cleaned at least 4-5 times a day.  A travel toothbrush should always be used when patients are away – this prevents plaque from forming around braces, which could eventually turn into decay.  White spots forming around braces are a result of not brushing properly.

Dr. Abdallah is Wellesley Dental Group’s new orthodontist. He’ll be sharing some tips and tricks for maintaining healthy teeth before, during, and after orthodontic treatment. Good luck on your journey to a great smile!
