Memorial Day, a national holiday that honors those who sacrificed their lives due to their service in the United States Armed Forces, is observed on the last Monday of May every year.
Some traditions of Memorial Day include visits to the Arlington Cemetery in Virginia, parades, and concerts. Many people place coins or flowers on the graves of dead soldiers. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 auto race, which always takes place over Memorial Day weekend.
Although the origins are still ambiguous today, there has been evidence that Memorial Day was created on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina by former slaves dedicated a ceremony to Union prisoners of war who passed away and gave them a proper burial.
We hope you take the time today to honor and celebrate those who have served for our country.
