Happy New Year from our team to you and your family! New Year’s Day is the beginning of the  Gregorian calendar celebrated in most parts of the world. Midnight on New Year’s Day is typically celebrated with fireworks, fire crackers, noisemakers, and a toast with champagne or sparkling ciders. However, New Year’s celebrations vary across cultures, religions, and countries.

New Year’s Day is a public holiday in the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and many other places around the world. Many government businesses are closed and individuals have the day off from work or school. A highlight for many in the United States is watching the New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square, New York City. The concept of the New Year’s Eve ball  was thought of as an alternative because of a ban on fireworks in New York City in 1907. The New Year’s Eve ball is currently made of Waterford crystal and weighs six tons!

In Japan, the New Year symbolizes renewal. In December, several parties are thrown to say goodbye to the problems of the past year and welcome a new beginning. On New Year’s Day, children often receive small gifts.

In Spain, many enjoy the tradition of eating twelve grapes at midnight to symbolize twelve happy months in the coming year.

The Jewish New Year is a ten-day celebration that begins with Rosh Hashanah and ends with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It is held in September or October, depending on the Hebrew calendar dates. During these holidays, Jews make amends for any wrongs they have committed during the previous year.

In Scotland, a popular New Year’s tradition is called “first-footing,” where neighbors visit with each other and tell their New Year’s wishes.

There are a lot of fun celebrations going on across the world. We hope that you have a safe and fun New Year’s celebration welcoming in the start of 2015!
