Holistic/Biological Dentistry

You might think that your oral health only affects your teeth and gums, but did you know that it also has a huge impact on your overall wellness? That’s why many dentists practice holistic dentistry, which links the health of the mouth to the well-being of the rest of your body.

For instance, many recent studies have provided evidence for the connection between gum disease and diabetes, pregnancies, Alzheimer’s disease, certain cancers, and heart disease.

Many people think that the only difference between traditional dentists and holistic dentists is the use of mercury fillings. However, there are many other issues and differences as well.

Some main differences between traditional and holistic dentistry include:

1. Mercury Fillings

While traditional dentists use mercury fillings because they are easier to apply and are approved by the ADA and FDA, holistic dentists don’t. They know that mercury, even in small amounts, is toxic and that these kinds of fillings weaken the tooth.

2. Root Canal Therapy

Holistic dentists don’t recommend root canal therapy, because research has shown that it isn’t effective except when the canal is completely sterilized and rid of bacteria (which is nearly impossible to do). They also point out that the sterilization process often involves toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde and that the remaining bacteria could increase the risk for breast cancer or heart disease.

3. Fluoride

Even though fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, holistic dentists reject ingested fluoride because there has been research linking ingested fluoride to cancer, bone issues, and fluorosis.

4. Biocompatibility Testing

While traditional dentists don’t provide choices for cavity fillings or test materials they put on the body for reactions, holistic dentists may test biocompatibility and have a wide selection of composite filling materials.
