Irritation from braces

Q: Dear Dr. Emad,

What’s the best way to deal with irritated gums and lips from braces?

A:  Brushing the gums with a soft toothbrush on a regular basis helps in reducing irritation. Wax applied directly to the braces reduces friction between it and the cheeks. With time, cheeks get thicker from inside, so that braces are not a problem anymore. Flossing is a key factor in maintaining the health of the gums, by preventing food impaction between braces.
