New England Flu: Update

From Health Watch MD

The peak of this year’s flu season has passed, according to Dr. Alan Woodward of the Public Health Council. The number of patients has started to drop, however, people with flu-like symptoms are still checking into hospitals across the state. All in all, Massachusetts has vaccinated at least 760,000 adults, which has included many first timers.

October marked the start of the 2012-2013 flu season and since then, 20 flu-related deaths have been reported, including that of a 6-year-old from Boston.  This season’s peak was a month early, the usual peak being usually February or March, according to the Boston Globe.

As college students from across the country prepare to go back to school, they are highly urged to get vaccinated. Even though the peak has passed, the flu season is still in full swing. Some colleges and universities such as MIT, Northeastern, Simmons, Tufts, and Wellesley are offering free flu vaccines for their students. For some of these schools, student walk-ins are provided.

If you have not yet gotten your flu vaccine, please contact your local Health Department.

Below, you will find the contact information of the Wellesley, Needham, Newton, Natick, and Weston Health Departments. You are still at risk if you haven’t gotten your flu shot, so don’t wait and get one today!
