Preventing relapse

Q: Dr. Emad, how can I avoid needing braces again?

A: Wearing retainers after braces is extremely important in reducing the chances of relapse, a condition where teeth tend to move back to where it used to be before Orthodontic correction.  A large debate exists as to how long retainers should be worn.  It is recommended for at least 2 years. However, teeth are living tissues and will continue to move throughout life. It is recommended that retainers be worn at least once a week, for as long as possible, acting as a check point for teeth.
