Who would have thought that taking a selfie video with your camera phone of tooth-brushing could help you improve your oral health habits? Probably not the first thing that came to your mind! However, research published in the Indian Journal of Dental Research from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine found that filming smart phone video selfies of tooth-brushing can help individuals learn to enhance their brushing techniques and oral health care habits.
Researchers observed participants brushing habits before the study, assessing them on how long they spent brushing, and how they brushed, including their brushing motion and angle they placed their toothbrush. Then, participants were told to start filming their brushing at home. Researchers found an improvement in all areas except the amount of time spent brushing. There was an increase in the accuracy of brushing, and an 8 percent improvement in overall brushing skill. The researchers believe that by recording a selfie, individuals may become more cognizant of their brushing and form a desire to make sure they are brushing properly.
