What to Eat After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

smoothiesWisdom teeth extraction is a common operation for many people.  Although the surgery itself is usually painless and quick, the recovery process can be quite exhausting.  One of the biggest concerns for people who have just gotten their wisdom teeth out is what to eat post-operation.  There is a lot of swelling and sensitivity for a few days after surgery and this can make eating problematic.

Initially after surgery, only liquids should be consumed.  Drink any liquids from a glass and never use straws.  The suction caused by straws can dislodge blood clots and interrupt proper healing.  Eating soft foods that are high in calorie count and protein will be crucial during the recovery period.  Regardless, your food intake will be very limited during the healing process so you should try to compensate this by staying hydrated at all times.

In general, you should eat soft foods and avoid hot foods.  Some dentists recommend eating cold foods to help with the swelling.

Here are some yummy things you can eat (other than boring Jello!)

  • Green smoothies – just throw in some kiwis, kale, coconut water, and a banana into a blender!
  • Greek yogurt with honey
  • Mashed potatoes with butter and gravy
  • Smooth hummus
  • Chocolate pudding pops
  • Milkshakes or ice cream
  • Homemade applesauce
  • Scrambled eggs with cheese

This is a great time to get creative with your diet!  Try throwing various delicious ingredients into a blender to make different kinds of smoothies.  Or, combine your favorite ice cream flavors with milk to make a unique milkshake.
